A School Born from a Belief in Better Education
Welcome to Thimphu High School.
Thimphu High School (THS) is a fully residential, co-educational school located at Khasadrapchu, Tsaphu village, approximately 18 kilometres from Thimphu. Set within six acres of lush greenery and surrounded by forest, our campus offers children the space to learn, grow and discover themselves away from the noise and distractions of the city.
But THS is more than a place.
It is a community built around children.
The idea behind THS began many years ago, growing from a desire to create a school where children could receive a strong education while also experiencing the warmth, care and sense of belonging of a family. Having already spent many years serving children and families through education and childcare, our founders wanted to create a natural continuation of that journey—a school where children could learn, live and grow in one supportive environment.

Our Story
An Education Journey Built on Experience
THS was founded by Vivi Tshering and Tshering Penjore, whose lives and careers have been shaped by a strong commitment to service.
For Vivi, education has always been close to the heart. Her own experience at Loreto Convent helped shape her belief in the importance of education, character and service. She later founded Thimphu Primary School, which has been serving children and for more than 20 years. Her commitment to the community also extends beyond education, including her involvement as a De-Suup in supporting community and skilling initiatives.
For Tshering Penjore, with more than 27 years of experience with Bhutan’s national airline, serving in various senior positions, brings his corporate experience and a deep understanding of professionalism, responsibility and service standards. At THS, he brings that experience to the day-to-day life of the school, with a personal commitment to ensuring that the wellbeing, safety and experience of every child remain at the heart of the school.

Why THS?
We established Thimphu High School with a clear vision: to provide young Bhutanese students with access to a high-quality international boarding and academic experience within Bhutan. For many years, students seeking such opportunities had to travel abroad, leaving their families and country at a formative stage of their lives. We believe Bhutan has the potential to offer an equally enriching environment—one that combines strong academics, character development, independence, leadership, cultural values and a vibrant residential school experience.
Our aim is to create a school where students can learn, live, grow and discover their full potential in a safe, nurturing and inspiring environment, while remaining connected to the values, culture and spirit of Bhutan
We believe that academics alone cannot create a well-rounded individual. Every child needs to be nurtured with care, encouragement and guidance by a dedicated faculty. At THS, we offer a broad-based education that brings together academics, community service, sports, creative arts and skills development. Our approach is designed to help each child discover their unique abilities, set goals that are both ambitious and achievable, and develop the confidence and determination to pursue them.
THS is a full-time, seven-day boarding school, with a structured academic timetable from Monday to Saturday. Afternoons are dedicated to community service, sports and a range of activities that allow students to explore their interests beyond the classroom.
Sundays provide a more relaxed pace, with opportunities for sports, outings, outdoor activities and time for students to pursue the things they enjoy. To encourage students to make the most of the school’s natural surroundings and community life, weekend trips to the city are not encouraged and are permitted only once a month.
As we grow, we are also committed to building a diverse and multicultural school community. We plan to welcome a limited number of students from other countries, creating opportunities for children from different backgrounds and cultures to learn, live and grow together at THS.
